370-Rule, Athletic Program Guidelines

Policy Number: 370-Rule

The Board of Education of the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau School District believes that participation in athletic programs or other extracurricular activities is an integral part of the educational process. The board also believes that all school activities need guidelines if they are to be effective and to reach their maximum potential. The board has adopted policies governing the operation of extra-curricular activities.

All schedules and scrimmages must have prior approval of the Activities Director and/or building administrator.

There shall be no paid staff members or out of district competition at the elementary school level.

Track meets, golf matches, baseball and softball games, before school is out, should be scheduled so there are not more than two (2) contests on days preceding a school day per week per team. Contests scheduled on a school night should be kept to a minimum and/or scheduled in such a fashion as to interfere as little as possible with class time of the student athletes.

Game/meet maximum schedule limits will follow the guidelines established by the WIAA.

Middle school teams shall play not more than 16 basketball games. All 7th and 8th grade games should be scheduled on the same day. Not more than 12 wrestling meets may be scheduled at the middle school level. Middle school teams shall play not more than 15 interscholastic volleyball matches at each grade level. Middle school football is limited to a maximum of six games including scrimmages and intramural games for each grade level. Middle school track and field is limited to a maximum of eight meets. No inter-scholastic baseball/softball games shall be scheduled at the middle school.

State tournaments may be attended by the head varsity coach and one assistant chosen by the head coach but are limited to one scheduled school day. Any coach employed as a teacher will not be charged a personal day or have to pay for the cost of a sub. All costs are the coaches' responsibility.
